2012 TKT CAMPUS Asia and TiROP Summer Program - Closing Ceremony

On August 24, 2012, the Closing Ceremony for the inaugural TKT CAMPUS Asia and TiROP Summer Program was held at the Royal Blue Hall, Tokyo Tech Front (TTF) at the Ookayama Campus. Under the newly developed Tokyo Institute of Technology International Education and Research Program (TIER), this summer Tokyo Institute of Technology hosted 8 TKT CAMPUS Asia students and 14 TiROP students from various world-class partner universities across the world.

Over the course of the Summer Program, each international student undertook a research of his or her own interest in a laboratory with an assigned Academic Advisor, a Tokyo Tech professor, and a Tutor, a Tokyo Tech student from the same laboratory. Doing research in a Japanese university laboratory with Japanese students was an eye-opening learning experience for these international students as many stated the Japanese laboratory atmosphere was very different from the laboratory environment back home. Except three students who left Japan early, all of the remaining 19 students attended the Closing Ceremony.

The one-day long Closing Ceremony consists of three parts: research presentations by participating students, farewell lunch and the conferral of certificates. Other than the international students, Academic Advisors, Tutors, and the TIER program staff, many friends and lab members of the international students also attended the Ceremony to show their support. At the end of the Ceremony, Professor Jeffery S. Cross led a general discussion session for students to share their thoughts on the Summer Program and their experiences in Japan. From all the positive responses received from the students, it proves that the inaugural TKT CAMPUS Asia and TiROP Summer Program was a great success.

Rakugo Live on July 3, 2012

Mr. Shinoharu Tatekawa, a Rakugo performance artist, was invited to Tokyo Institute of Technology to perform the classic Rakugo story of Tenshiki, in English, for TiROP and TKT Campus Asia exchange students.

Tenshiki is the story of an arrogant, wiseacre priest. One day, a Buddhist priest felt ill and called for the doctor.  After examining the priest, the physician asked, “Do you have a Tenshiki?”  The priest did not know the meaning of Tenshiki.  However, not wishing to appear ignorant, he pretended to know and answered that he did.  After the doctor left, the priest called a disciple in order to try to find out the meaning of Tenshiki without revealing that he himself did not know.  When the disciple too did not know, the priest humiliated him and sent him out to “find out by himself” the meaning of Tenshiki so that he will not forget it again.  The priest claimied to have already taught the incapable disciple the meaning once before.

“You might think Japanese are very shy and serious, but we have cherished and transmitted this humorous story for over 300 years!” Mr. Shinoharu said.

After the performance, there was a lengthy and lively Q&A period about Rakugo and Japanese culture with many cross references to the students’ own cultures, which numbered over half a dozen.
